Fellowship “Cycling to Serve”. The Rotary Club of Tucson, in District 5500, founded the Rotary Ride to End Polio in 2009. That year, Tucson Rotarian Michael Harris (pictured), also a member of the Fellowship, was able to enroll Rotary PolioPlus as one of the nonprofit beneficiaries to participate in El Tour de Tucson. When sadly Mike died in 2021, District 5500 added his name to Rotary’s event title in his honor. This year alone, the Ride to End Polio raised a total $5 million! Lucy rode and donated in honor of her dad who was passionate about Rotary’s campaign to eradicate polio worldwide, and her mom made Polio Plus one of their primary charities during their lifetimes.
To date the event has raised $23 million, and thanks to 2x matching support from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the total amount contributed to Rotary’s Polio Plus Fund tops $68 million!
